I have to admit that the problem lies in you if you've got problems with people 'checking-in' at Restaurants, Bars, Theaters - among other places, on Facebook. 

There are worse things people do on FB that are extremely annoying - uploading 100s of self-portraits (standing in front of a mirror while holding a camera/smartphone makes it worse) with quotations of some wisemen, uploading billions of pics of a newly born kid,couples telling each other how much they love and miss each other when they share the same bed in the same apartment etc. 

Regarding showing off cars, jobs...it's understandable for people to find it tacky. When somebody overdoes it, then that's understandable but if someone uploads a pic of a new house, car or some recently bought item that he/she endears a lot and you don't like it, you have issues with yourself.
