Pine Manor College honors Pariyar with prestigious ‘Honorary Degree’

Bishnu Maya Pariyar, who was born in a far flung village Taklung of Gorkha in dalit family, made a firm commitment to dedicate her whole life for the social service.

Her commitment and dedication is now going to be honored through a 100-year old prestigious award by the Pine Manor College, a reputed college based in Boston.
The award will be conferred to Pariyar on 12th May 2o13 on the occasion of the convocation ceremony of the college for her contribution to uplift the status of dalit women in Nepal through EDWON (Empower Dalit Women of Nepal), an organization she established for the empowerment of women. She has studied International Development and Social Change from this same college.
Expressing the pleasure, in her statement, College’s Interim President Ellen S. Hurwitz has said that Pine Manor College wants to honor and felicitate the person like Bishnu Maya Pariya, founder of EDWON, who have been doing a praiseworthy works to empower and uplift the women. The organization, she founded, provided education to more than 10 thousand of dalit, poor and underprivileged children by building school and providing scholarships to them.
Nearly 23 hundred of women have been empowered through various programs which have benefited nearly 11 thousand women directly or indirectly.
Pariyar is the first person to receive such a prestigious Honorary Degree from the whole South Asia region in its 100-year long history of the award. Students from 60 different countries and 50 states of the USA study at this College. Pariyar is a among a very few Nepali women who have received such an honorary degree in the US.
Pariyar has made a significant contribution for the social transformation despite various odds she faced during her life of being dalit woman.
She has also been felicitated by World Bank Family Network, United Nations Association along with 2 dozen other national and international awards.
