Monarchy can stage a comeback if people so wish: Former king

Former king Gyanendra Shah has said that monarchy can stage a comeback in Nepal if the people of the country wishes so, but clarified that he will not get involved in politics again.

Speaking at a press meet in Butwal, the former monarch, who is on a religious trip to western districts of Rupandehi, Kapilvastu and Nawalparasi said, “The monarchy was abolished as per the wishes of the people and it can be reinstated again if the people want it back.” He said that people are not happy with the current political situation of the country and want the institution of monarchy to give the country the much-needed stability.

“People are now starting to realize that the institution of monarchy is necessary for the country,” the former monarch said, adding that monarchy can fulfill the role of a new force – he can act as a cultural monarch - the country is looking for at the moment to again unite the country.

Accusing the political party leaders of selling the country to foreign powers, he expressed concern at the situation of the country which according to him is much worse than it was when he lost his kingship following the abolishment of monarchy in the country. nepalnews.com
