Somerville —

A Somerville man was arrested on child rape charges last Tuesday. Raj Gurung, 41, was arraigned on May 23 in Somerville District Court on charges of statutory rape, forcible rape of a child, indecent assault and battery on a person under 14 and dissemination of obscene matter to a minor.

The victim and suspect were known to each other and the incident occurred in the past year, according to Deputy Chief Paul Upton. Somerville Police would not reveal any further information on the incident in the interest of protecting the victim.

“We cannot provide any further details without outing the victim,” said Upton in an email.

The Journal does not identify victims of sex crimes.

Judge Neil Walker set a $100,000 cash bail and ordered the suspect have no contact with and stay away from the victim, wear a GPS bracelet and remain under house arrest, have no unsupervised contact with children under 16, and surrender his passport to probation, according to Stephanie Guyotte, a spokeswoman with the Middlesex District Attorney’s office.

Gurung will be back in court June 27 for a probable cause hearing.
