KATHMANDU, JUL 20 - Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ramesh Chand Thakuri, one of the prime accused in the Sudan scam who was sent to custody, was freed on Wednesday after he posted Rs. 70 million bail.

The Special Court had, on Tuesday, sent Thakuri to Dillibazaar jail after he failed to post the amount demanded by the court.

A full bench of Special Court had demanded the bank guarantee from Thakuri, after recording his statement and conducting hours long hearings on the corruption charges against him.

The court issued the ruling citing that the preliminary evidences hold him accountable for releasing US$ 450,000 in six installments to Assured Risks, the London-based supplier of the Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) and US$ 273,063 as the seventh installment while he was heading the police administration.

The CIAA has filed a case against 34 senior police officers and suppliers on the charge of misusing around Rs 290 million while procuring the APCs and other logistics worth Rs 450 million for Nepali peace keeping mission in Darfur, Sudan.
