Why do you think the glucose checking kits are not accurate? The glucose level never stays the same throughout the day. It's different before you eat and after you eat. My guess is they probably are accurate.
For check ups, there should be free clinics that you can go to. Just search for free diabetes clinics in your state on google. I searched for VA and this is what i came up with: http://www.vafreeclinics.org/virginia-free-clinics.asp
Diabetes, if goes uncontrolled can have devastating long-term effects (for some people it can go from Type II to Type I for which you have to get insulin shots everyday). If your parents aren't on any medications and after trying to control through diet, i hope you're doing everything right. I suggest you read up on how to manage diabetes. There are tons of resources online.
