Delhi Airport transit-experience

We visited India (my native country) in Aug. 2008. On the way in, we had a two stop flight (Raleigh-[Disallowed String for - castist references disallowed]k-Brussels-Chennai) in. However, on the way back to Raleigh, we had to add Delhi airport into the mix. Because we were coming from Chennai, we had to go to the domestic terminal and transfer to the international. Due to security concerns, the Indian government made you take your own luggage on the bus to the International terminal. However, this restriction was lifted before we traveled to Delhi. The ignorant airport staff said that the restriction was still in place, even when you could have just left your baggage for them to transfer.

When we took all of our baggage to the international terminal at around 9 PM, the doorman told us that we could not enter because our flight was only much later. After some prodding, he reluctantly let us in. Unfortunately, inside the terminal, there were 30-odd seats, most of which were taken up. We spent a while standing or sitting on our baggage. Jet Airways would not let us check in for a while, so we looked for something to do. This is a lousy airport, so there was nothing to do, and the only restaurant available was a Subway. Their sandwich was probably the best thing so far. After a few hours, we checked in and passed through GIANT security lines.

The terminal was in a circular shape, with shops in the middle. There was nothing except greasy fast food and Rolex watch shops. Useful for 12 in the morning... In addition, the terminal was very noisy and crowded even at that time, making it impossible to sleep in the chairs. The chairs, were however, nice to sit on. The crowd noise drowned out any announcements, and missing your flight was a very real thing there. After 3 hours of shivering (yes, it was cold), we boarded our Jet Airways flight to Brussels at ~3 AM. All in all, Delhi airport is a disorganized mess.
