It's possible to artificially produce pure gold, but the process is expensive.
Fake gold => gold plated copper or some other element. But artificial synthesis of gold is something different than fake gold.
What if someone comes up with a cheaper way to synthesize gold? Then the value of pure (or naturally occurring) gold might significantly go down.
