You could go to Macy's. They have a wide selection of designer's perfume. They have testers for every brand they have. You could try 'em on and decide which you like the most. Anything ~$50 (depends on volume again) could fetch you a nice one.
I have also found perfumes by Hollister, American Eagle, Banana Republic to be nice in terms of smell. I don't know how long they last though.
Personally i've used and liked, Polo, Polo Black/Double Black, Men's in Motion by Hugo Boss, Lacoste, Farhenheit by Christian Dior.
But it eventually is a personal choice.
