job market of US changes every 3-4 years. back in early 2000 IT was really strong, then around 2004 because of IT consultancies it got really difficult and only way to get into it was through the same blood sucking consultancies, around that time Accounting and Finance seemed really good field of studies because they were always stable, then then come around late 2007 they crashed so bad that you all know. now it has come to the point where accounting majors see no point of going to school. I heard a commercial on local radio the other day, it goes something like this, "hello kids, this is mr. XXX and he's an accountant , today he's going to tell us what he does as an accountant. Accountant: thank you msXXX , hello kids, my name is XXX i am an accountant and i pass around resumes. So please take my resume and give it to your parents." the commercial was run by some job hunting agency. So if you chase after the market in the US you never know where you'll end up. but if you are good at anything and if luck favors you you will get good career one day. so the folks up there are right , go after what u like, not where green card is. and now a days , looks like everyone's going after nursing, who knows what's there for nursing tomorrow with new health care plan or foreign quota.
btw, what do you guys think about degrees like bioengineering, biochemistry, physics, chemistry etc.. are they stable and easy to find jobs after you graduate?
