I don't think F-1 students can invest in stock market. In fact, F-1 students are not allowed to do anything except paying their college and living a harsh life. If you still want to trade stock, just go for it. Beside, stock itself is a risky business and taking one more risk by breaking a rule won't be a big deal. 
In terms of day trading, it requires at least 25,000 to start day trading. The requirement is set by SEC and is high because day trading is not suitable for all investors. Day trading involves high risk and should only be considered if you have over $25000 that you can risk to lose.
