Hurt Locker wins over Avatar

To impeach Academy awards like few did above, you perhaps need to understand the history behind how selections are made. Although having said that, I have my own set of frustrations when Slumdog Millionaire won the best movie last year, it was an over the top melodrama which was readily embraced by American public, and then the whole world. I doubt if it would have received similar recognition had it been directed by Deepa Mehta.

At times oscar awards seem delusional. I can list few more examples where Penelope Cruz defeated a significantly better actress in Amy Adams and Denzel Washington (although a great actor he is, he certainly did not have an edge over Russel Crowe that year) over Russel Crowe.

Avatar was a mega-buck, mind boggling saga which had a predictable finale. If there is anything laudable in that movie, it is the special effect. Who needs a camera when softwares invent Pandora? Therefore I thought choosing 'The Hurt Locker' was justified. But then again, I thought Maggie Gyllenhal excelled over Monique, but that might just be a personal thought.
