You must be buying crappy laptops with life of 2 years. My IBM thinkpad is crossing 3 year and I abused it lot for many trips to Nepal and all over the place. Still it runs like a butter. On the other hand my nephew's Dell is dead in 16 months. It is just "what you pay what you get" rule.

But I agree with your other comments as the buyer has to know what he needs the laptop for and depending on the need laptop type can vary ranging from $300 to $5000.
