Nepali student's deportation draws flak in India

• New Delhi seeks report from Maharashtra govt, Pune Police

KANTIPUR REPORT

NEW DELHI, JAN 04 - Maharastra state government of India has drawn flak from various quarters for Dec. 5 deportation of Nitu Singh, a Nepali student at Pune-based Film and Television Institute of India (FTTI), for her alleged involvement in "anti-Indian" activities.

The Home Ministry in New Delhi has sought report from the Pune Police and Maharashtra state government after a fusillade of criticism of the Nepali student’s deportation.

On Saturday, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) MP Brinda Karat sought intervention of Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram on the case. In her letter to Chidambaram, Karat said "it was unthinkable in a democratic India a woman was deported owing to her family's pressure and the country's security agencies projected the issue as a matter of national security."

Singh's father had recently corresponded with Karat and said that his son-in-law misled his daughter.

Karat also demanded that Singh should not be prevented from completing her studies.

The Indian Home Ministry has sought a report from the Maharashtra government on the matter.

Singh, who was studying at FTII after being awarded the scholarship by the Nepal-based Indian Embassy, is the wife of Nepali Congress (NC) former lawmaker Amresh Kumar Singh. It was learned that their two-year-old marriage was on the rocks, and Amresh wants divorce from his wife.

Many media in India believe that Amresh, who is doing his PhD at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi, may have used his political connections to influence Pune police to deport his wife.

He was at the JNU hostel last week when the media reported that Nitu was deported.

Talking to ekantipur.com in New Delhi, he said that he was ignorant about the deportation. “I don’t have any idea about that. I sent her there for studies. I am not in contact with her these days.” he said. He claimed that he is in New Delhi for academic purpose. “I’m preparing for the PhD dissertation on Jan. 5.”

Nitu is living with her parents at their house Bhadrapur of Jhapa in eastern Nepal. The family said that she is depressed after the incident.
