DINESH WAGLE
DEC 14 - A week after announcing its resumption of non-lethal military aid to the Nepal army, India on Monday conferred a title of honorary general of the Indian Army on Nepal Army Chief Chhatraman Singh Gurung, who is on a week-long visit to the southern neighbour.
Indian President Pratibha Patil handed over a guard of honour to General Gurung amid a special function organised here at the presidential residence of India this evening. The two countries have been sharing the tradition of honoring each other's Army Chief with the honorary title for the last six decades.
Prior to taking the honorary title, the visiting Army Chief met the heads of all three defence sector of India—land, air and marine, during which he briefly discussed the current military and political situations of Nepal, Colonel Ashok Narsingh Rana, who is a Military Attaché at the Nepal embassy in Delhi, said talking to ekantipur.
Rana, however, said the formality and value of meeting between the army top brasses would be confined to discussions only as the decisive talks about the bilateral ties between the two countries would be held in the government level.
"The discussions underlined the need for continuing Indian assistance to Nepal," said Rana, "But the governments of the two countries would decide on the same."
India had recently agreed to resume military asistance to Nepal that was cut off four years ago after former King Gyanendra seized absolute power.
Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Chhatra Man Singh Gurung had left for India on Friday at the invitation of Indian Army Chief Deepak Kapoor.
