Even as the Cabinet today urged him to take oath of office and secrecy as per the orders of the Supreme Court, Vice President Parmananda Jha has said that he can only consider re-taking oath after all the languages spoken in Nepal 'are given due respect'.

In a hastily organised press meet at the Vice-President's office Sunday, VP Jha said, "Only after the seventh amendment of the interim constitution currently under review at the Constituent Assembly is endorsed by the government and the Constituent Assembly and all the languages spoken in Nepal are respected will I consider re-taking oath."

The seventh amendment of the interim constitution proposes that a President, Prime Minister or any government official can take oath in their mother tongues.

During the press-meet scheduled for 1 pm, but which started half an hour later and went on for 20 minutes, VP Jha severely criticized the Supreme Court's July 24 order to him to re-take oath in Nepali or else vacate his post - the deadline is set for today.

He called the SC's verdict 'prejudiced' and against the tenet and spirit of the interim constitution, the "great people's movement II, Madhesi movement" and the aspiration of the Nepali people, and said it serves no purpose other than to start a "language war" as it is against the basic rights of the people "to take oath in his own mother tongue".

At the end VP Jha, in a cryptic remark, laughingly said that he has just received the letter from Council of Ministers asking him to be present for the oath-taking ceremony at the President's Office at 4 pm, but he has already made clear during the press conference what he will do.
