I concur with rationale.

Your first attempt would be to intimidate him by telling him its a serious problem if he don't pay you.

Depending on which state you are in contact the office of labor commission and report the matter. You will have to fill up forms such as this one http://www.laborcommissioner.com/docs/wageclaim.pdf

He will also be fined by the INS for knowingly hiring an unauthorized person to work which will cost him $10k (don't quote me on this I think the amount has changed). But you have to report it.

You can also bring up more charges since you have been exploited. Try talking to a lawyer but since its a small amount it's not worth to hire a lawyer.

But be sure to inform him about the consequences he will face. He would most probably pay you.

But you will also get yourself in trouble since you have work without authorization if your employer plans to hire a lawyer.

Good luck.
