Platitudes, self-righteousness and insolence aside, let me share what I have heard:

I have been told that it is best if you put the statue facing east.  So when you pray, you will be facing west.  I have also heard that if you have thangka or bhagawan ko portrait that you put on wall - more as decoration, not for puja-purposes - it is best to put it where you will have the view when you enter or leave the house.
