agree with u guys, dont know the exact reason why sum ppl vehemently try to demean the gurkhas, they r fully incorporated in british, india, singapore n brunie as regular force, who r benefited by every priviledges n facilities and pensions paid as any regular forces, which does not happen as for 'bhada ko sena' or mercnaries. here r sum of thier contribution to nepal which they hav been able to provide through gurkha welfare trust.

"Nepal suffers from earthquakes and landslides. There is very little industry and there are few roads. It is a harsh environment in which to live, and the work of the Gurkha Welfare Trust is crucial. The Trust operates 21 welfare centres throughout Nepal and one in India. These are manned by retired Gurkhas who investigate cases of hardship and distress and recommend appropriate aid.

Approximately £20 per month, enough to buy basic food, is paid to about 10,600 needy Gurkha ex-servicemen and widows who do not receive a military pension (15 years' military service is required to earn such a pension). Medical treatment is also provided for them and their dependants. In addition, hardship grants are awarded to alleviate destitution following fire, flood and other natural disasters. The Trust also helps to fund the education of some 1,500 children each year. " (http://www.gwt.org.uk/operates.html)

"BGWS Project - Gurkha Hospital

Following the General Meeting of 12 February 2006, and the statement by the Chairman for the need by BGWS to establish a hospital in Nepal - a contribution from the Gurkhas as a whole. This will not only make each and every Gurkha proud but 'lahures' seen in a different light with the stigma we carry for ourselves totally removed. When we bought Gurkha Bhawan, you will recall it seemed a pipe dream but our success surprised everyone, while giving us the confidence that with unity anything can be achieved - where there is a will, there certainly is way.

We have a long way to go on the 'Gurkha Hospital' project but best we sow the seed now. We are positively and strongly moving forward, any donation received for BGWS will now go towards the project. Once we reach our initial goal of £10,000 we will register this project as a separate Charity Fund, which will allow us to raise funds specifically for this purpose. I thank one and all for their support thus far." these r just few examples, not to forget the remittances they bring in. n if it is physical envolvemnt many r talking about, all those congress armed revolution against rana were possible only due to gurkhas who had just returned from WWII n had immense expereicen in warfare, again thier involvemnt against panchayat paved way for democracy, even though the corrupt leaders screwed up later.
