Beau, I appreciate your concern but I am not sure if the option of donation supported site will be viable. When there are so many more worthy causes that one can donate to, I am skeptic that people would want to donate to run a website.

Perhaps a more viable method would be to make paid accounts where there are no ads yet a section for advertisements. How does this seem to you and how much will you be willing to pay lets say per month for this kind of ad free access? I have not put a lot of thought into it but just want to get some general feedback to see if there is some kind of consensus on this.
