First of all, we must make a distinction between “can it happen?” and “should it happen?". They are different questions and have different answers accordingly.

Then, we must understand that real life ‘love’ is not a single elemental phenomenon. It has several components. And each component is governed by a different governor, so to speak. This is a very rough sketch. Because there are partial interdependencies among those components.

2. Intimacy

3. Commitment

Now, you will have to ask the original question to each of these elements separately to get more accurate answer. The answer is pretty obvious.

1. Passion -- yes, it can. But better control yourself
2. Intimacy -- yes, it can. But be careful about its management
3. Commitment -- yes, you can. But that will be a cheating.
