Govt launches literacy campaign; aims to achieve 100 pc literacy rate in 2 yrs

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said the vision of New Nepal will come into reality only when every Nepali citizen becomes literate and with this motive the government has launched an extensive literacy campaign.

Inaugurating the ambitious plan to eradicate illiteracy within the next two years, in Bhaktapur Wednesday, PM Dahal said the government needs support from all sides to make the campaign successful.

He added that the special programmes focus on people's easy access to education as education is the backbone for development and social progress.

With the slogan 'Know Alphabets, Be Literate' the government aims to make around 2.6 million people literate within mid-April for which Rs 1.04 billion has been allocated. The second phase of the campaign will begin after mid-April. Nepal's illiterate population is estimated to be around 7.8 million.

Some 100,000 students who passed School Leaving Certification (SLC) and another 8000 students who crossed higher secondary level will get part time teaching job during the campaign.
