Some unfortunate consequences of this sad episode triggered by BRB's senseless decision to stop funding for some Indrajatra rituals are gratually unfolding. Dumping its  glorious history into dustbin, the jatra that had been officially observed as a state ceremony for so many years has now suddenly been reduced to a cultural event significant only to the Newars. While Newars are proud to declare it as a NEWAR MATRAKO MAHAN JATRA  and seek some temporary negotiation between some Newar representatives and the government, some others have started saying 'Khuchhing' to Newars. Though the festival has been basically celebrated only by the Newars, compulsory participation of the head of the state and observance of public holiday made it an official celebration in the capital, making it more than an ordinary cultural event of Newars only. And, I believe that most non-Newars in the capital would not want to see these cultural events losing significance even if they do not participate actively on it.

The consequences are clear. Indrajatra, and all other jatras and cultural events for that matter, that had long been observed as events of state significance, will gradually be divided among ethnic lines till they become insignificant in the national perspective. BRB and his companions are clear in their ideology of evolving into a society of 'international'  nature (see the official dress of the prime minister) rather than promoting things of national identity especially cultural and religious ones. A few thousand rupees is not is not the crux of the matter, it's really the popular and national significance attached with the event. This episode has reduced both by letting the event be tagged as a celebration exclusively for a specific community.
