Nepal’s VP Jha: An Insult For Gurkhas

Saturday August 02 2008 00:01:10 AM BDT

Much is in the news that Nepal’s first ever Vice-President took oath of secrecy for his post in Hindi language. Unknown to this controversy, Mr. Jha knowingly sparked this communal outrage despite knowing that “Hindi” is not a language for “any” ethnic Nepalese. The criticism was certain.

Madhesis—people living in the Southern part of Nepal—share common culture with some people of the northern province of India. Nationalist Madeshis have serious objection to the word “Indian Origin” associated with them. In fact, there was no such thing as “India” when Madeshis used to live in Nepal. Madheshi a race in Nepal, and portraying them as people of “Indian Origin” is putting their identity in crisis. Madeshis always existed in Nepal; history does not support anywhere that Madeshis migrated from British India. Labeling Madeshis as Indians is India’s mere strategy to gain control over greater Nepal.

Because of the cultural similarity, Madeshis preferred to be closely associated with India. However, they were not able to see the visionary approach of Indian expansionism over Nepal. The fact that Madeshis were ignored in Nepal was because of the lack of Madeshis to be a “Nepali”. Their upbringing was more “Indian” rather than a “Nepali”. Most Madhesis get married in India, and send their children to India for higher studies. I remember while having conversation with a fellow Madheshi, they used to say, “If a problem arises in Nepal, we will cross border to India”. This implies that they never truly believed that Nepal belongs to them equally as the people of Pahadi origin. Madeshis’ upbringing has major deficiencies for not letting them to be Nepali. They are hesitant to speak in Nepali, wear like Nepalese, or identify themselves as Nepalese; yet, they claim they have been denied of fundamental rights.

There have been issues of racism; this fact cannot be ignored. However, the astute nature shown by Madeshis to break Nepal into their regional interest in unacceptable by any ‘Nationalist Nepali”. The proud of being a Nepali can only be understood if you learn to be proud of what you have. We are lacking the visionary approach here to understand the matter of complex foreign affairs involved. The people’s war started against the atrocity of the government to change the system—not to introduce a regional war. After the Maoists agreed to end the bloody war, the self interested parties showed their opportunism. They realized that was the time to bargain. After three years of bargaining, Nepal is getting smaller everyday, people are turning against their own fellow Nepalese, and India’s dream to break Nepal is succeeding. We Nepalese have acted foolishly in this matter. Despite knowing the “cruel” nature of India, Nepalese are fighting within themselves.

A joint approach from all Madeshis, Pahadis and other ethnicities, can uplift Nepal to the level where Nepal deserves to be. Nepalese have not mastered to be the “fraud” as their Indian counterparts are—which gives a clean image of Nepalese to this entire world. It is the time to understand what lacks within us that is hindering us from progressing. Why Nepalese cannot stand strong to resist India and be prepared to launch a war against India if a need arises?

The history of Gurkhas evidences the bravery because of which no umpire on earth could rule this land of Gurkhas. The federal system of division based on ethnicity will further invite a clash of two different ethnicities. If people of Nepal truly want a federal state, why are they not pushing the agenda of “Greater Nepal” to reverse the Sugauli Treaty? After all, India has illegally captured our land. Why can’t Nepal expand its border towards the South while India continuously attacks Nepal’s border? Madeshis’ presumption that India cares about them is erroneous. Ethnicity has been used as a tool to gain political recognition by leaders. We should take precaution here. Let the Nepalese not be derailed from the path of “Nationalism” and divert you towards “ethnocentrism” by these leaders.

We must realize, our Nepal, is in great danger and needs to be rescued. It was unfortunate for Nepal the day British Umpire left India. Since the day India was born, Nepal has been on the edges of annexation by this unfriendly neighbor. India presumes that the entire people of the world who resemble South Asians are Indians. In the foreign land, if they see any South Asian, they question “What part of India are you from?” People remain shocked about this inference. Without any reasonable justification, they falsely presume everyone to be Indian. It is their lack of knowledge that makes their brain revolves only around India, but they seek opportunities only in the outer part of “their world”. This shows their nature of upbringing.

Hence, the oath taking of Nepalese Vice President in Hindi language strengthens India’s views that Nepal is India. Nepalese should not afford India an opportunity for this false presumption. His using of Hindi language has not only humiliated the Madheshis, but the Nepalese throughout the world. He has attempted to unofficially recognize Nepal as part of India. This act must be deplored, and it needs a worldwide protest. No act of comprise with Nepal’s sovereignty should be tolerated. Nepalese must be united to fight for their recognition, and if need be, this leader should be arrested in charge of violating the Nepal’s constitution and the spirit of the people. So far, the Justice system in Nepal has failed due to the inability of the justices to grab power and ensure a fair checks and balance. This serves as an opportunity for the Supreme Court of Nepal to show that judicial system stands by the truth and cares for the nation equally as the citizens of Nepal.

The lack of patriotism could be blamed for this act. Ethnicity and Nationality has no correlation. At this hour, Nepal’s sovereignty is threatened; yet, we are looking for self interest. This is the time to be united and flourish the glory of our motherland to the entire world. Together, we can do it. The bravery and intellect garnered by our forefathers will prove to be true eventually and we can unify Nepal again as the founding father Prithvi Narayan Shah did.
