Shenanigans: Getting dumped for Obama

Really. Rachel Keller said she was dumped for Barack Obama, and she has a song and a video on YouTube to prove it.

In the video, a guy (a body double who coincidentally looks like Obama’s speechwriter Jon Favreau from the back but is not) gazes into Keller’s eyes and holds her hand while she sings: “It’s no secret who you wanna date/You planned our vacation in every swing state ... /When he said there’d be change in 2008/I guess you thought he meant us.”

Keller, a 27-year-old health care consultant who is backing Obama, told us Wednesday that she had been dating a guy — whom we’ll refer to as Nameless Philly Guy because she declined to name him — for about six months when they suddenly broke up. He said that he was “all wrapped up in the campaign.” And he’s not a campaign staffer. Nor does he live in D.C. Nor does he work in politics — he’s a health care consultant, too. (For now, let’s just ignore the politics of two health care consultants backing Obama.)

“I’m your average girl who likes Us Weekly,” Keller said. “And I read the headlines in The New York Times, sure, but I’m not as in-depth as that. And so there were times when he wanted to go canvass Ohio and I wanted to just hang out with my friends.”

And when they broke up? “I kept thinking, ‘I got dumped for Obama.’ I can’t believe my relationship ended because he was involved with the campaign.”

Relationship or no, she still hearts Obama — as a candidate. “Yeah, I totally support Obama; I just don’t want to date him.”

The guy she’s dating now? “I said to him the other week, ‘I don’t even know who you’re voting for, and I kind of like it.’”

Nameless Philly Guy texted her a few minutes after the YouTube video went up. He was a good sport, Keller said, and appreciates the humor.

A friend of Nameless Philly Guy who also knows Keller said: “Well, he himself got dumped for Dole back in the ’90s, so he took it in stride. It just shows that when the chips are down, America needs boyfriends with the judgment to leave.”

Keller added: “I think people can relate to it, because I know a lot of girls who are like, ‘My boyfriend is really into Obama. Like really into him.’”

Oh, no. A new trend?
