Many many years ago I used to live on 46th street, take 7 train to get to work at a cafe/restaurant, then called the Big Apple Restaurant, must have been 38th or some street. I lasted there 2 weeks. Then found another job at a liquor store on 44 street, on south side of 7 line, owned by 2 Israelis. One of them knew a few Nepali army officials from his days as an army instructor in Nepal (must have been in the 60's or 70's). The incentive there were free booze (2 miniatures per day, authorized), besides whatever I could sneak out, which must have added to quite a lot over time.

Very soon I will be in a similar situation as you are in. Different city, different context, but the emotions, issues, worries are just as same. You give me some hope to cope with it.

Glad to see you back on your life and college after the demise of your grandfather.
