GURKHA Dilemma!!!

It was about  a year ago in my school, we had an international party. I was with a young Nepalese student who just finished his 12 from India and came to USA as a freshman....Then, one American guy came and talk to us, and asked where we are from and when we told him...in excitement, he said "oh! Nepal???..I know little about Nepal..I have read it in some books...so..you guys are Gurkhas!"

...as soon as he said that, the young Nepalese guy said, "Mind your language, the term "Gurkha" you have used is not a proper word to refer to Nepalese, and is as bad as N-Word to call African Americans..."

...I was totally shocked! and so was this American dude...He was totally feeling guilty and apologized and left in hurry...Then I turned and asked him "why the hell would you say something like that?"...he replied "it is true isn't it? That's what Indians call us to discriminate..." I replied "yeah maybe some parts in India to refer to the security guards...but that is what we are known for in the world...for the bravery of our Nepalese...That is a term that introduces us to the world as brave soldiers from Himalayas...that term is what we should be proud of..and so on"....But he just kept saying "You do not know that as you have not been in India..." and I kept on saying "That is like disrespecting all the hard works Nepalese soldiers did to gain that trust and honor..."but he was not convinced .....

I was completely shocked by this incident....Is it just him or have you guys seen any other Nepalese strongly believing this? .......Or, was I wrong? What do you think?
