Mark my words;
the prospect of Sex, Money and Power make you do things you initially never wanted to do.
Despite being excellent candidates, these big three have been dragging each other into the mire since the other weakest links got voted out. After all, that's politics which is played out in similar fashion anywhere in the world.

I do agree that zeal in the people who were following the primaries closely has certainly died down significantly.
