You are wrong in your assumption that F-1 is invalid once you start working. F-1 status is the only status you will be in when you are in OPT right after school. You don't need to know anything about what you want to do after that. If you want to continue school after OPT, you can simply transfer your records and don't even need a new F-1 visa stamp to remain in the usa. I-20 is enough.
