दिल-ए-नादान तुझे हुवा क्या है
आखिर इस दर्द कि दवा क्या है?
(What is ailing thee, my simpleton heart ?
What is remedy to your pain, eventually ?)
हमको उनसे वफा कि है उम्मीद
जो नहीँ जानते वफा क्या है
(I am hopefull for faithfulness from her,
Who does not even know what faithfulness is.)
हम है मुश्ताक और वो बेजार
या इलाही ये माजरा क्या है
(I am ardent and she is disgusted;
O ! My Lord, what is happening here ?)
जब कि तुझ बिन नहीँ कोई मौजूद
फिर ये हंगामा ऐ खुदा क्या है
(When nothing exists here without you !
Then what is all this tumult about, O Lord ?)
जान तुम पर निसार करता हुँ
मैँ नहीँ जानता दुआ क्या है
(I offer my life to you;
I know not what is the prayer of blessing.)
And one of my all time favorite couplets, from the same ghazal:
मै भी मुँह में जबाँ रखता हुँ
काश पुछो कि मुद्दआ क्या है
(I too, keep a tongue in my mouth;
I wish you would ask me what my desires are.)
