uptowngalji,

According to Hindu caste system, Baisya is the third caste after Brahmin and Chettri associated with traders. Its equivalent in India is Baniya. But I don't think this caste system works so well in Nepali society. I think  SurNaTalji put you up as Baisya because he probably thought you are a Newar from Kathmandu. But within Newar too, there are Rajopadhyaya whose job is similar to Hill Brahmin. So, categorising Rajopadhyaya (and even Joshi sometimes) along with Baisya doesnot seem to work. And SurNaTalji categoried me (a Magar) also as a Baisya but my forefathers, uncles and other kins were never involved in trading. They are/were in the armies of different countries (UK, India, Nepal). So, Baisya does not seem to categorize us well. Magar, Gurung, Rai, Limbu should be categorized as Chettris because they take part in battle (fighters). Manange, newar traders, Churaute (Muslims) should be categorized as Baisya because they are traditionally involved in trading of goods. Rajopadhyaya, Joshi, Lama, dhami, jhankri should be categorized as Brahmin because they are involved in religious procedures traditionally.
