As Felicity wrote above, I also don't think most of the people in the USA become detached to their family members and their culture, food etc. in such a way. That said, I have also seen so many people, who have found themselves having a reverse cultural shock when visiting Nepal after long long time. It's your fiction and you have got the right to portrait your characters the way you like.

You've ended your story very nicely. Way to go!
