IF, I agree most you said but not the sucide part by that junkie historian, it could be the reason that lead to heart attack though. Also here is an excerpt of Sardar Patel's letter to Jawaharlal Nehru on 7-November, 1950 Let me also consider the political considerations on this potentially troublesome frontier. Our northern or north-eastern approaches consist of Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, Darjeeling and the Tribal Areas in Assam. From the point of view of communications they are weak spots. Continuous defensive lines do not exist. There is almost an unlimited scope for infiltration. Police protection is limited to a very small number of passes. There too, our outposts do not seem to be fully manned. The contact of these areas with us, is, by no means, close and intimate. The people inhabiting these portions have no established loyalty or devotion to India. Even Darjeeling and Kalimpong areas are not free from pro-Mongoloid prejudices. During the last three years, we have not been able to make any appreciable approaches to the Nagas and to the hill tribes in Assam. European missionaries and other visitors had been in touch with them, but their influence was, in no way, friendly to India or Indians. In Sikkim, there was political ferment some time ago. It is quite possible that discontent is smouldering there. Bhutan is comparatively quite, but its affinity with Tibetans would be a handicap. Nepal has a weak oligarchic regime based almost entirely on force; it is in conflict with a turbulent element of the population as well as with enlightened ideas of the modern age. In these circumstances, to make people alive to the new danger or to make them defensively strong is a very difficult task indeed, and that difficulty can be got over only by enlightened firmness, strength and a clear line of policy. I am sure the Chinese and their source of inspirations, Soviet Russia, would not miss any opportunity of exploiting these weak spots, partly in support of their ideology and partly in support of their ambitions. In my judgement, therefore, the situation is one in which we cannot afford either to be complacent or to be vacillating. We must have a clear idea of what we wish to achieve and also of the methods by which we should achieve it. Any faltering or lack of decisiveness in formulating out objectives or in pursuing our policy to attain those objectives is bound to weaken us and increase the threats which are so evident. They took Sikkim, Assam, Butan became a commonwealth country, the only country left for them was Nepal. Mahendra understood this problem early and took action though he had to crushed elected government.Wait and see approach was too dangerous at that time. We forget but not forgive. Looking back at the time, it was way easier for India. We may not be talking in Sajha this subject nor cheering for Prashant. It is common tendency of people to neglect/deny about something that didn't happen but "precaution is always better than cure" is the reason in their logic first. Most of the nepalis including so called intellectuals prolly have no idea about the pain that palestine people have to live through. The vision of partyless system was solely to stop the influence of indian in politics and also M. took initiative like not to make marriage link with indian rajas. It was never intended to be one party system but inactiveness of birendra, high greeds of his queen/her bhardar and revenge mind of congress helped thus collapsed. Congress thought they were cornered by king only but now they understand republic communist rule is death sentence to their existence not just cornered - as leaders grow older. Democracy comes first or country? is not as complicated as chicken and egg puzzle. True that monarchy has always played nationalism card but sadly it is the the defacto truth in the context of nepal. I wish I would deny too but only if I could built time machine and defeat PNS. We are heading toward bangladesh if not sikkim or cuba that is for sure. People may have dreamt of Singapore but what it took to build it only few have a clue.
