The bill is "stupid" for other reasons: namely, parts of it, like the path to citizenship are unworkable. But as for the point system, as America ages, it needs immigrants if it wants to be the dominant power on the globe. To me it looks like the US Congress has grudingly accepted that immigration cannot be stopped so the focus is not on stopping such immigration as much as it is on trying to control what type of immigrants get in.

If the numbers get out of control as the Heritage Foundation article suggests, I am sure Congress will step in to make ammends.

Also, for those not aware, the Heritage Foundation is a right wing think tank with a generally unfriendly attitute towards immigration so such an analysis coming from them has to be taken with a grain of salt.

This from wikipedia:

"the Heritage's stated mission is to "formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense." Its operations have transformed the traditional concept of the "think tank" and have had a significant impact on the domestic and foreign policies of the United States government."
