Khasi Ko Masu

Something reminded me an incident when we went to find a "Khasi" for our Nepalese Students’ Dashain Party. It was back in October, 1999 at the University of South Alabama. We were about 15 of us from Nepal in that Univ. We decided to have a big Dashain party with Khasi ko masu. We launched an exploration project to find out if there was any farmer who raise goats and sell for meat consumption. After couple of days of exploration, we discovered a farm deep in the rural area in the state of Mississippi. It was kind of scary to step in somebody’s farm land. Moreover, the farm was owned by a deep accent redneck in southern Mississippi. Dogs started barking us, may be thinking that some aliens came to earth which we normally here in the stories. The dog barking was not meant to scare us but to inform his master that customers are here to see the “Sahu Ji”. A multi-color bearded man with some strange weapon (may be some tool) came out of his dung-smelling ranch. He asked us “How ma help ya”. We went little closer and asked him if he sells animals for meat purpose. He said yes and asked “What ya need”. We told him we need a goat. We also asked him if he slaughters goat. He said he would do that. As a matter of fact, he was a kind of business man who raises animals and slaughters and sells. He had his own small slaughtering stall in his back yard. He also agreed to clean without removing skin with all “Andra Bhudi” included. He asked us to choose any goat we like. So, one of my friends walked into the thick herd of goats inside the goat pen. He grabbed one with goat’s tail and lifted the goat and tried to estimate the wait. After lifting couple of goats we decided to take one. The farmer said 60 bucks. We said ok. It was a young goat with less small. Now the interesting part was that we were very anxious to know or to see how he would slaughter the animals in his own backyard which we normally don’t see in America. He brought the goat to the slaughter yard and tied to a pole. He went inside and came out with a fully loaded pistol gun. We were bit shocked and scared what he was going to do. He pointed the barrel to the head of goat and pulled the trigger. We trembled and astounded for a moment. The goat fell and did not even make a sound. Then he chopped off head and started cleaning the goat. He cleaned skinned very nicely even the “Andra Bhudi” was cleaned with his water gun. He asked us if we wanted a gun wounded head. We said we don’t need the head. I don’t know what he did with that head. It was really amazing event. We paid 60 buck for goat and 20 bucks for tips. We came back with a big bag of meat laughing and laughing. It was a great Dashai Party with “Khasi ko masu with skin” and “Bhootan of Andra Bhudi”. The party went for 3 days.
