I was posting a reply in som other thread but I saw this. I wanted to share the knowledge about Nepal Sambat. Please correct me if my knowledge is not accurate. Bikram sambat by the name itself is established by King Bikramaditya of india. So you should be rather questionning the essence of the date system in Nepal. It is neither scientific nor of any historical importance for nepal. It indicates the dependancy of Nepal on India, india by itself does not even care about the date system. I would bring the same arguement with the English Date system. It denotes the birth Christ. Why do we care about it? why do we celebrate new year in the first place as Jan 1, coz the dominant religion says its god was born that day? why do we even care about it? As for Nepal Sambat, it is scientific to some extent, it is derived by the revolution of moon around the earth. Every month is more or less 30 days. Which would ease the calculation of days (as foryour arguement about date conversion), every year will have 360 days( for your kind information, which is not the best thing to have but its lile leap year in english date, for which Nepal samvat has Malamas for every 6 years I believe to cover up the lag so that the date is in sync evey 6 years). So I believe that Nepal Sambat is more scientific, atleast you dont have to check calendar for the last day of the month, its always 30, and just look up at the sky and you will know what day of month it is every full moon indicates a month start. You will know why we celebrate Deepawali in a no moon night every year. the best reason why only Nepal Sambat needs to be used in Nepal is that it is the start of ear when nepal was once free of debt. It indicates that atleast one time in History Nepal was out of debt, is that not a good enough reason to mark in History? Next time we will be out of debt will be (I wont live to spell that date). So I think Nepal sambat has essence to the history, culture, and everything in Nepal, who knows the world may follow the same (just being optimistic). Nhu da ya bhintuna.
