Well my friends I may not agree with some of you at this point! If you are talking about all the caste system in Nepal where the bramins and chettris are the only ones who are corrupted and don’t let other people from other caste participate in politics that is not true and I don’t want to get into that right now but since I sensed some of you echoed inequality because of bahuns and chettris who have probably suppressed Newars all the time, have you ever looked into the caste system that the Newars have created for themselves?? I would say that they should clean their acts first by treating all Newars equally then only talk about other casts who don’t treat them equal. Did you know that the Newar are divided into hierarchical clan groups by occupational caste, readily identifiable by surname, such as Bajracharya / Vajracharya (Buddhist priests), Pradhan/Shrestha(administrators), Shakya (goldsmiths), Jyapu (farmers), Rajkarnikar: halwai (confectioners), Tuladhar (weigher craftsmen), Tamrakar (copper craftsmen), Manandhar (oil pressers), Chitrakar (Artist/Painter), Joshi (astrologers), Ranjitkar (dye related workers), Nakarmi (blacksmiths), Kulu (drum-makers), Chami (sweepers), etc. ?? Till this day in the Newar community the upper caste people look down upon the lower caste people. Such a division of people have created a rift in the society and what have Newars done to accommodate every Newars on one platform in their own caste system? I was stunned when my Newar friend said that she could not marry a Newar since he was from a lower caste!!! Here is a great opportunity for Newars to step up and prove that they can make positive changes in the society even though they are not in the politics (as per some well wishers in the group). Newars should realize how rich their culture is and feel proud about it! Preserving Newari culture means a lot for Nepal as a whole! They should not feel suppressed rather work for the unity amongst their own caste system and prove to others that there is only one Newar caste in the whole country so people from other castes can see and realize how effective it would be if we all could combine all other castes and be only know as NEPALESE!!!
