Maoist breakaway group worries MPs POST REPORT KATHMANDU, July 13 - Parliamentarians have asked the government to take seriously the activities of theTerai Janatantrik Morcha (TJM), a breakaway faction of the Maoists, as it has become increasingly aggressive in the eastern Terai in recent days. Speaking at the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs and Human Rights Thursday, they urged the government to take measures to address the problem posed by the TJM before it spreads to other parts of the Terai belt in the form of communal violence. "They have reportedly been equipped with sophisticated weapons, even more [sophisticated] than that possessed by the Maoists," said lawmaker Suresh Kumar Karki at the meeting. Reportedly led by former Maoist leader Jaya Krishna Gohit, TJM's activities have increased in Saptari, Siraha and Rautahat districts. The armed group is currently targeting people who are migrants from the hills or are just staying in those districts. The group is also involved in abductions, killings and terrorizing people. Recently the group abducted two government customs officials and released them later. They also killed two Maoists. Speaking at the committee, parliamentarians asked Home Minister Krishna Sitaula, who was present, not to underestimate the activities of the TJM as past governments did in the case of the Maoists. Home Minister Sitaula said the government is serious about the problem.
