Imi, why do you keep bringing Pakistan’s example to support the Hindu State? It is irrelevant here since we are not talking about Pakistan and 51 other Islamic states. We are talking about Nepal and Hinduism. I strongly believe that secular Nepal will help Hinduism. Religions evolve with time. Hinduism also evolved with time and that is why it still exists after 5,000 years. There was a time of Vedas, then came Puranas. When Hinduism was threatened by Buddhism at one point, Hinduism actually adopted some points from Buddhism and so Hinduism flourished. However, lately Hindus have become lazy and have stopped evolving. If the State keeps on protecting Hinduism, and banning conversions, then Hinduism will have no overt challenges and will not reform. If Hinduism does not reform, then people will be apathetic, and the marginalized Hindus will convert to other religions. And I do not blame them. If Hinduism discriminated me, I would change too and you would too. In the mean time, missionary works go on under the radar because of the ban. The government should have no business in it's citizen's religions and even if it wanted, it would not be able to keep track of missionary work. So if I was a devout Hindu and I would want Hinduism to flourish, I would say go ahead with the Secularism. At least then, all the missionary work will be in open. Hinduism will see the challenge from other religion and there will be more public pressure for Hindu priests (not just Pashupatinath, but others as well) will have real incentive to put the money in charity. Also, High caste Hindus will be forced to treat the lower castes better. Devout Hindus will have to be more inclusive and will have to follow the preaching instead of just doing puja path. I think it is better for Nepal to be secular and Nepalis to reform Hinduism rather than Nepal to be a Hindu State while the religion decays from inside due to the lack of reform. Fundamentalist Hindus (mostly Indians) have problem with a secular Nepal. But majority of Nepalis are moderate Hindus. High Caste Hindus make only 30% of Nepali population. So all these fear tactics from fundamentalists will not work in Nepal.
