lfc, I was in no way talking about giving up culture. I was talking in general, the trend that one actually practices in Nepal. For example, if a girl marries a guy, she NORMALLY takes up her husband's last name. That is what I was implying. I am glad you asked- thereby giving me an opportunity to clarify my previous comment (made in jest) to Mr. Bahun. As far as "giving up one's culture" comes, khoi- although we are all different (among Nepalese), yet we are all similar. In that, dashain, tihar, etc ta sabbai ley manauchha. Other things specific to Tamang culture, it depends on the family of the guy, and how open they are to it that should determine it. Yes, some families might be liberal enough, some families may be fine with the girl going and celebrating it with her family (maiti), and some might not be cool with the idea. At least that is what I see around. If we are talking about a nuclear family, ie: if the couple choses to live separately, then it is entirely upto the couple how they lead their lives. In conclusion, I never implied that one would give up the way they were brought up. Thats something instilled within us, and no matter what, is always within us. (The culture, the lessons our parents and grandparents taught us). Hope this makes better sense, B.B.
