this is kinda hard. never read these poems before. i dn't think i can get into as detaileed as the other one. in the firs poem, there are two chidlren haina, and they are supposed to sweep. i think they are slaves becasue the kid tells that he was sold by his father. and the little kid, tom, is scared. so the other kid is trying to console him by saying that if they faithfully do thier job, they will go to heaven and this thought makes them happy. the first poem is expressing some hope that god will free them eventaully from this stage of slavery said in the stanza. "And by came an Angel who had a bright key, And he open'd the coffins & set them all free; Then down a green plain leaping, laughing, they run, And wash in a river. and shine in the Sun" --> this dream is their state of utopia k and they are only hoping for this. they are hoping an angel will come and release them. so for now, they should stick to doing thier jobs and if they do it fairly, nothing can harm them. i however dont know if this is a straightforward message or if the poet is trying to say that these kids will never expereince utopia and they will alwasy be stuck in this cycle. in the second poem, the little kid is pushed to this state of unhappiness because of his own parents. its a critisim of teh church and what it imposes on the soceity. the kid used to be happy before ,tara his parents "They clothed me in the clothes of death, And taught me to sing the notes of woe",because they felt that to go to heaven, he must be miserable. (i think hai) which just means made him miserable and he is happy no more. the child realizes that the church only takes thier happiness away from them. the kid in the second poem is very critical of hsi parents and soceity. he is beliying his misery and sadness with his happiness and songs and dances, but his parents fail to see that. the kid also says that the church makes teh society suffer in this life by giving them a hope of heaven after their death " And are gone to praise God & his Priest & King Who make up a heaven of our misery". either that means the church benefits from teh misery it gives to people ("make up heaven) or it makes people miserable justifying that there is a heaven after death..... (how the church makes them suffer or why the kid is sad i don't know...may be its because the church tells him he has sinned or something) THEREFORE, in teh first poem, the innocnet kids "innocent"ly believe what the soceity tells them and believe that they will go to heaven. they are very innocent and gullible. in the second poem, the kid realizes that the church is the cause of its sufferings. contrasting chahi tehi ho. the first poem is about beleiving, having hope and the second is about dissing the church. good luck! the day u hand in ur AP exam will be the happiest day of the year.
