Columbus discovered America means he traced the route to the land and the people and culture that had never been exposed to the world before. Okay, he found it by accident. He was trying to find a sea-route to India and he somehow ended up in US (Hence the word Indian), but still he had all the proof of the route, he kept track of the navigation.
