Capt Haddock, Enjoyed reading your posts. Your take on this whole issue of racism cum casteism pretty much echoes my own sentiments, and I fully second your opinions on this, especially your dual-pronged deduction on the way to deal with such social ills viz 'F*cking 'em all' and 'Taking pride in oneself and one's heritage'. Yes, until and unless we can stand up to and fight the 'perpetrator' head on, this grotesque reality of caste-fascism will carry on reigning supreme. And being self-aware but most of all, having an informed and resolute stance on what matters to one - the issues at stake, will be key to tackling this all-pervasive nature of discrimination that exists in our society. Pagli's is a classic case in point but one that may well be only a tiny fraction of what is out there already. I remember reading an interesting article in Kantipur some time ago on Dalit issues and the trend of some of the Dalit leaders' changing surnames to suit their immediate situations. Is this a necessity, I thought, borne out of perhaps the prevailing social status quo that is still failing to create an inclusive environment? If yes, then would this trend help the wider Dalit cause? I thought not - by changing one?s surname will do nothing in the way of getting to eradicate the wholesale injustice that permeates our social landscape. It does quite the opposite instead: promote the hysteria of inferior-mindedness amongst wider Dalit communities, and by implication, encourage the society further to stick to its ills. I know, one's changing of surname is purely a matter of personal choice rather than principle but then, one would have found in all this, only a temporary solution to what is a much greater and graver problem, and shying away from confronting it will only help perpetuate it. Thanks and have a good day. Carpe diem
