PhD in finance from a reputed school is a big deal. A good friend of mine from a very reputed school and with impeccable GPA was turned down by Stern Business School(NYU) and Stanford business school. (He got into another school, which is not among top 10.) Later, he told me he came to know someone who got into Stanford that year from his country: the guy had won (gold medal in) math olympiad. The goal of PhD in finance is entirely different from MBA or something like that. PhDs in finance have a wide array of opportunities available to them, including teaching in MBA schools, or going to industry. Salary of graduates from low ranking schools start from 120K if they work as a MBA-school's professor. Top finance schools PhDs often, however, prefer to go to economics department to teach, because of the freedom afforded to them in creating their own syllabus and doing independent research. I don't know any Nepali doing PhD in top finance school so far, but that doesn't mean there are none. You can always try to get into. The usual prolbem of professoriat , low salary, won't be a matter if you teach in MBA schools, so rest assured, you will have a bright future if you get into any of the top schools.
