I was born and grew up in southern Assam, India in the hills of North Cacher. The majority of the people there were the local tribal people, and then next probably were Nepalese. The town I use to live in was surrounded by around 6-7 Nepali villages. My group from school consisted of a Chettri, Pradhan, Rai, Tamang and myself, Lama. We were the very best of buddies in the whole school. Every once a year, a huge sporting and cultural event was hosted in our district. 14-15 Nepali Clubs from all over the district would come to the host town and participate in the sporting events for one whole week. All the clubs would be hosted in a local school buildings or in camp house. Nepali guys and girls would stay in the camp for the whole week participating in the sporting events, that included football, volleyball, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho (a kind of Indian game), track & field events. Many guys and girls have fallen in love through these event and lot of them have married and settled down too. At the end of the week long program, the final day would be the most anticipated one, when the Champion team will be declared ,taking the running Trophy. The final day was also time for cultural program like dance & song competition, extempore speech competition and camp fire..I remember how, the champion team would go around the camps with the championship trophy, singing ?Suna Champa, Suna Tara, Kohi Jita , Kohi Haara? . The next morning , returning back to your town would be the most depressing moment, as experienced by almost all the participants. Back then nobody was Bahun, Chhetri, Rai or Tamang, everybody was Nepali..Just Nepali..Those were , as some people say, ?the good ?ole days?. Almost 15 years later here I am in America and when I first heard about the ANA meet, it flooded me with memories of those wonderful time. I am planning to attend the event in Texas this year, with hopes of seeing Nepalese together, as brothers, friends and countrymen and nothing else.....
