Crisis cuts Nepal off from world: [India News]: New Delhi, Feb 1 : Nepal was virtually cut off from the world Tuesday with communication links snapping shortly after King Gyanendra sacked the government, assumed all executive powers and declared a state of emergency. While telephone connections were severed, television channels were only able to show feeds from Nepal-1, a channel telecast out of India. "We have been showing only Nepal-1, and that too we have not been able to update since morning," said a journalist of a prominent 24-hour news channel. Media companies were trying in vain to make contact with people in Nepal or fly their staff to Kathmandu to cover the Himalayan nation's worst crisis since the royal family massacre three years ago. A newspaper reporter said: "All flights to Nepal have been cancelled. We have been trying to get our people on the Royal Nepal flight, but were told only Nepalese citizens were allowed on it." Telephone landlines and mobile phone networks were apparently shut down in Kathmandu while international flights were turned back from Kathmandu airport. "We have been unable to make any calls or get in touch with anybody," said a TV reporter. Flights to Nepal were either returned or cancelled due to the closure of the country's airspace. With Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport coming under a security siege, airlines were forced to return or cancel their flights. Indian Airlines cancelled a flight after one of its flights was forced to return after being refused permission to land. A Jet Airways and an Air Sahara flight were also forced to return. Nepali news websites also went down although Indian officials said road links remained open.
