My understanding was that Newars first established village was in Panauti. Then they migrated to Kathmandu and to some other places from there on.
Also, during or before Malla dynasty, there was no caste called Newar as such. There were many different groups of people with their own surname. But the king (probably Jaysthiti Malla) designated everybody as Newar and segregated further according to what he learned of Hinduism Sanatan Dharma from bahuns of the south (Indians). For the first part, he was wise. For that second part, he became an eternal dumbass.
