God is a Spaniard!
We knew God spoke Spanish when both Spain and Argentina defeated their opponents to reach the final of this World Cup, but in the end, God happened to be a Spaniard! Spain has won the World Cup after 16 years in the wilderness. Well, they did with Euro 2024, but the World Cup is a World Cup!
Spain is now undefeated in 38 matches, and this is an international record when it comes to men's football, surpassing Italy's previous record of 37 undefeated matches! Spain has the best record when it comes to the World Cup finals. They have been there twice and won it twice. Yamal gets his winner's medal, and he may win more in the days to come as he still has a decade or more to play competitively if injuries do not get in the way.
It's a sad farewell for our King Messi. Argentina could have matched Brazil's record of winning it twice in a row, but they just couldn't pull it through, especially with only ten men on the pitch later on. We were expecting some sort of a miracle like in the earlier matches from Messi, but I guess God had other plans.
This is Messi's last World Cup. He has appeared in three World Cup finals and has won one. If he had won all three, then he would have been the greatest athlete of all time for at least another century. But he will be one of the greatest footballing legends forever. I mean, appearing in three World Cup finals is not a joke.
The next World Cup will be in Spain's home ground, and if Spain wins it again, then they will match Brazil's record of winning it twice in a row. Yamal is not at the same level as Messi yet, but of course, he is just 19, and he could probably play in two or even three more World Cups, and who knows if God, luck, and the same great team play are in place, Spain could win three in a row and displace Brazil as one of the greatest teams in World Cup history.
The next World Cup will be happening in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. Finally, all of us here at home will probably not have to spend early mornings watching the games in 2030. Four more years to go and Nepal will not qualify yet again, but if our government can bring in the Japanese for their foundation courses and the Spanish for their tiki-taka and more aggressive penetration offense, then our young lads who are ten years old today could be in the World Cup by 2044!
I think we Nepalese spent at least millions of dollars, not rupees, in buying team jerseys here, supporting our favorite teams. And our FB statuses were filled with love and support for all the foreign teams. Maybe we should all look in the mirror and wonder why we can't be in the World Cup?
This government should create a football fund that directly supports the development of football at the local levels, and we can all contribute. Let the ANFA wallahs loot the FIFA funds for their own luxurious lifestyles, but we must provide the resources and the technical skills to our young lads and ladies from the age of ten, and that costs a lot of money.
It's time our Sports Ministry received at least US$ 100 million a year budget instead of four times less, and most of it goes to pay the salaries and perks for the government employees instead of the athletes! It's time to work on mission 2044, and hopefully by then we can all post FB statuses supporting our own team and wearing our own jerseys!
