The Budget Justice!
After years of talking about our Fake Bhutanese Refugee scam, the Kathmandu District Court has finally decided to punish the scam artists. But as usual, our justices at the District Courts seem to be very lenient or still think like they are in the 70s when it comes to doling out the actual punishment and fines.
The ringmasters like Sanu Bhandari, Keshab Dulal, and Tek Narayan Pandey just got four years in the hole. While our former ministers, Top Bahadur and Bal Krishna, received four years and a gentle two-year sentence. And Topey Dai will have to pay a fine of Rs 40,000, while our former Home Minister Baley Bro will just need to cough up Rs 20,000, while most of them made a few crores each from the victims!
I think our justices, who mostly are jholeys of our old political parties, the Congress, UML, and Maoist (CUM) lots, need to use the web more often so that they can learn a thing or two from other such cases around the world and also learn to use the calculator on the side when they want to impose a fine on the guilty ones!
These eggheads were engaged in a multi-crore Rupees international human trafficking scam, and all they got was a few years in prison and a few thousand Rupees fine. Are our justices going to pay the victims who lost crores in this scam from their own pockets, or should this new government also be held liable and asked to somehow sign some agreement with the victims and pay from our national coffer?
Our justices hand out twenty-year sentences to other folks who engage in human trafficking, but when it comes to our netas and their jholeys, they seem to develop amnesia, or most probably want to make it easy for their party members, maybe. Only two years for the former Home Minister, when most of us know that he made a few crores and also gave some to Arzoo Deuba as well.
Why is Arzoo didi not charged with anything? Why is Baley Krishna's wife, Manju didi, left alone when she was the main paisa distributing agent in this whole scam? I guess our old school media will not talk about this because they have been engaged in extortion and Chiya Kharcha from our netas and foreign embassies for years!
And another former Home Minister, Ram Bahadur Thapa's son Pratik, has been given a clean chit as well. The word on the street is that Pratik made crores when his daddy was the Home Minister and has many lands in Pokhara and business ventures across the country. Why is it so hard to gather any evidence when it comes to these netas and their kins, but our police wallahs can catch a motorbike thief in less than 24 hours?
These scam artists will be out by 2030 and then go back to their lives, but the hundreds of victims have nowhere to go to seek a refund. There are more than 115 verified claims, and the figure is more than Rs 28 crores. So who ran away with that much money, and how on Earth are we going to get it back so the victims can go home with their dough?
It's a shame that we still have the same jholey justices around, and they will be here for a decade or two unless we start holding our justices accountable as well. Just a few years and a few thousand fine is a big slap on the face for all of us. Let's hope that our old school media will talk about this more than worry about illegally parked vehicles in front of their offices. Let's hope our patrakars get their priorities right and we really need to make sure our justices do not let the guilty ones get away with this kind of budget justice!
