Free Lunch over for Shady Byaparis?
Deepak Bhatta was the undisputed heavyweight 'Dalal' champion of Old Nepal for the past two decades. He is now in custody for his involvement in insider trading in the stock market and other shady deals.
Our Home Minister, Sudan Gurung, had to resign because he too had bought promoter shares of some micro insurance companies linked with Deepak Bhatta but then came the six degrees of separation or cooperation, is what I would like to call it and now we have Shekhar Golcha in custody and soon, Raj Bahadur Shah of our Ruslan Vodka will face the music as well.
It is not only these two who may have engaged in insider trading and other illegal acts but there are hundreds or even thousands of shady byaparis, contractors and old Jholeys who will have a ton of explaining to do when the CIB starts knocking on their doors in the coming days.
We all knew it all along but finally, it is now mainstream news that our so-called big business houses sahujis had been not only grabbing public land and evading taxes but also engaging in insider trading to make billions of Rupees from the stock market and promoter shares and some even not investing a penny to make those illegal profits.
Our so-called business community is worried and is questioning the investigations of their fellow byaparis and warning the government that this will not only destroy our economy but also jobs and tax revenue and more.
Really? I don't think so. The 33 so-called big business houses employ roughly 300,000 folks in this country. We have 500,000 folks leaving the country each year for better employment opportunities. Even if all of these business houses are shut down and their properties confiscated, it will be enough to finally award real and fair compensation and bonus packages to the 300K employed by our shady byaparis.
The factories in our country do not pay fair wages but the bare minimum to keep up with the law. Sambhav Sirohiya claims to have taken his Kantipur Group from an annual Rs 60 crore loss to the break-even point during his tenure. He has resigned from his post as MD because he did not agree with his own papers' report on Sudan Gurung. Sambhav thinks he is Trevor Noah, maybe.
If you were losing Rs 60 crore annually, then how could you afford a few Karods parney luxury vehicles and dine and wine in foreign lands while your staff was not getting paid for six months? The same goes with the Republic Media folks and many other media houses as well.
Well, the era of free lunch for our shady byaparis is finally over. These mafia wallahs have been milking the system by bribing government officials and netas and jholeys for the past three decades, and every good thing must come to an end, innit?
And here in Nepal, it's the same bunch of folks, the same families owning all the banks, insurance companies, schools, hospitals, media and every other trading business known to mankind.
They have looted enough and now maybe they can play by the rules, not cook their books, not engage in fake VAT bills and tax evasion and run businesses in an ethical and law-abiding manner!
Don't flaunt your wealth from shady dealings and then cry and whine about how you have employed thousands and should be awarded and not discarded by a government hell-bent on transparency, accountability and good governance!
